GM Yermolinsky - Tata Steel 2023 - Video 4

Opening: A14, E44: English - Neo-Catalan declined: 1...e6 2.Nf3 d5 3.g3 Nf6 4.Bg2 Be7, Nimzo-Indian - Fischer Variation 5.Ne2

Player(s): Ding Liren, Giri, Erigaisi, Rapport

A dramatic turn of events in the last round of the 2023 edition of Tata Steel in Wijkaan Zee saw the home favorite Anish Giri leapfrogging the tournament leader Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan to capture the title. Despite this setback Nodirbek has to be proud of his performance. Anish Giri always plays well on his home turf, and this year's event was no exception. His wins, particularly the crushing one against Carlsen are owed to excellent preparation, which is no surprise, but this time Anish showed a great determination throughout the 13 rounds of play. Video #3 is his, and deservedly so. One player who failed to meet expectation was Ding Liren. The Chinese star was unrecognizable, which is an alarming sign for his supporters in view of the upcoming World Championship match. Video #4 is some odds and ends, but Ding's losses stand out like a sore thumb. You can download the games in PGN format HERE
