GM Yermolinski - GCT Bucharest - Part 1

Opening: C80, C67: Ruy Lopez: Open (Tarrasch) Defence, Ruy Lopez: Berlin Defence - Open Variation

Player(s): Vachier-Lagrave, Deac, Caruana, Giri

Grand Chess Tour returns after missing a year due to COVID with its usual schedule of events. There will be a mix of classical and Rapid/Blitz tournaments this summer, but the prestige of the series took a hit when three of the top four players turned down their invitations. It's understandable that Magnus and Ian wanted to clear their schedules in preparation for the World Championship match in November, and Ding Liren's absence can be explained by the lingering difficulty of international travel. The Tour organizers managed to retain the core of regular participants, and they will sprinkle it here and there by guest appearances of Kramnik and Kasparov. The Tour lives on, which is a good thing for us, spectators. One issue that we have witnessed in the inaugural event, a 10-player Round-Robin in Bucharest, is the poor form of the participants of the recently concluded Candidates. A deeper look at the games is required to figure out what is wrong.
