GM Yermo Teaches You Openings! - Botvinnik Semi-slav - Part 2

Opening: D44: Queen's Gambit Declined semi-Slav, Botvinnik system (anti-Meran): 1. d4 d5 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Nf3 c6 5. Bg5 dxc4 6. e4

Player(s): Yermolinsky, Gurevich, Azmaiparashvili, Shirov, Van Wely, Smeets

In the early 1980s, as I managed to elevate my game and became a regular contender in qualification tournaments to the USSR Championship, I encountered many problems with my opening repertoire. While I was reasonably well-versed in many 1.d4 structures, I wasn't prepared to face some of the sharpest responses, mainly the Botvinnik. Many times I had to abandon any hopes for opening advantage by avoiding it altogether. This had to change. Eventually, I turned the corner and overcame the fear of the Botvinnik. Throughout my career, I actually enjoyed facing it, and racked up a pretty decent score in it.
