GM Petrov’s Pirc defense - White plays f4 and e5

Opening: B07: Pirc Defense

Player(s):

In this chapter, GM Marian shows you the line in which white advanced his central pawn to e5 after he plays f4. It can be done before or after Nf3. From a white point of view, it is better first to develop the knight. In both cases, black has two options to take, which could lead to the early endgame if white decides to take back with the d- pawn. Or as well, black can retreat the knight with the idea of pushing c5 and destroying the center. Now white has few ideas. Develop the bishop to c4, put his pieces in the center, or push h4 and h5, hoping for a quick checkmate. In this line, black has to be very careful, as he has only one way to survive.
