GM Petrov’s New Strategies in the Middlegame - Vd5: Open Files

Opening: C02, B12: French Advance Variation, Caro–Kann Defence

Player(s): Petrov, Popchev, Tsatsalashvili

This video will show one of the most critical and often underestimated topics: Open Files.
Open files could happen right from the start or later in the middle game. Usually, they become more critical in the endgames, but sometimes, if there is a king left in the center, they could be a dangerous weapon for the attacking player. Sometimes we have to open files by trading pawns or giving material if it is for creating an attack.
Usually, the best way to use them is with the rooks. First, we should go there, then if we have a chance to double the rooks, and then bring them to the second rank. Ideally, after that, we should try to double there, and after that, the game is won.
That is why it is vital to fight for the files and not give control over them easily.
