GM Petrov’s New Strategies in the Middlegame - Vd4: Counterattack

Opening: B32: Sicilian Defence: 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 (without 3...cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 (B33) 4...e6 (B44–B47) 4...g6 (B34))

Player(s): Petrov, Bae

This chapter will see what we need to do to create a counterattack. This means, of course, that first, we will be under some pressure. Depending on how dangerous your opponent's initiative is, you have to reply either with the first try to consolidate your position or, in most cases, to defend your King against the immediate threats. Once you do it, make sure you try to predict all the potential combinations and active ideas for your opponent. When you defend, think about the counterplay, deploy only as many pieces you really need in the defense and let the rest create some threats.
