GM Petrov’s Attacking Ideas in the Openings - Video 8: French for Black

Opening: C02: French: Advance Variation

Player(s):

In this video, GM Marian shows you few ideas for black in the French opening. In the advanced line, when white goes a3, you can block with c4 and then castle queenside. After this, if white goes for the most popular system with g3 and h4, you have to play f5, forcing white to take on f6. Then bring the knight on f5 and the bishop on d6 and let the rook on the g file to do the job. In the 3.Nc3 line, you can choose between Nf6, which is more solid, and Bb4, with some wild positions. In the first case, you can give a chance to white to make a mistake with castling without taking on c5. Quickly play c4 and b5, and you might have a miniature. In the other line, just follow the mainline; white has to be careful because black has a simple game with many tricks.
