GM Petrov’s 20 Endings you must master - Video 6: Rook Endgames

Opening: :

Player(s):

In this video, we will learn some of the most critical rook endgames.
We start with the Lucena position, in which the strong side has to win rook and pawn against rook by using the bridge technique.
The rook first cuts the king, then moves to the fourth rank, and after that helps the king to hide from the checks.
There are few deviations of that positions, and sometimes the weaker side can save the game.
Another crucial position is the Philidor. Rook and pawn against rook when the king is in front of the pawn.
Here, the simplest thing you have to do is stop the king from entering the 6 ranks by moving the rook there.
When the pawn moves, the rook has to hurry to the first rank to meet the king move with checks.
Finally, some key endgames with a rook pawn when either the king or the rook are in front of the pawn.
