From the initial concepts and from the intro video, it may seem like the Volga/Benko gambit is all about powerful tactics, attacks, and initiative. Well, mostly. But, all those tactical fireworks need to be backed up with some serious strategical foundation! This means that black is building up his counterplay on healthy positional grounds: excellent and reliable pawn structure (usually 1 pawn island), very strong Bg7, positional pressure on the Queenside, sometimes also on the kingside - when given a chance. Also, typically, black has outstanding piece play and coordination, which means that often you will have the opportunity to develop every piece to its best square, and put it to optimal use. Also, usually in the Benko Gambit, the black king remains safer than the white counterpart. One of those strategical tools which black can use is white's a6-f1 diagonal.
