GM Misa Pap’s “Volga Benko Gambit” - Artillery on the a and b files

Opening: A58, A59: Benko Gambit: 7.e4, Benko Gambit accepted

Player(s): Pap, Ikras, Aslan, Bauk

Amassing heavy pieces on the a and b files is one of the most standard ideas in the Benko Gambit. Usually, black aligns his heavy pieces on the a-b files - sometimes even the c file could be used - and then, in combination with intense pressure from the h8-a1 diagonal, he creates tactical threats. But not only that! There are many other ways for black to use his artillery effectively. Also, an essential idea in the e4 Bf1 line is if you can complete the Nb6-a4 maneuver with your Knight  – and then, it is not so easy to be in white’s shoes!
In this third installment of his series on the Volga-Benko Gambit, GM Misa shows us all the subtleties of this fundamental trait of the opening, that will help you add another weapon to your Volga Gambit arsenal!
