GM Misa Pap - Strategic Planning in Chess - Vd6: Open Center

Opening: B22, C41, C07: Sicilian: Alapin Variation, Petrov's Defence, French; Tarrasch - Open Variation

Player(s): Pap. Kang, Marcus, Steinbacher, De Wachter

This is quite a fascinating subject, and as the name says, here we have positions without (or almost) pawns in the center. That means that piece play and piece activity becomes extremely important and especially, of course, the fight of these pieces for the center. Also, play can often get very tense, and we will have a real 'open battle.' So, in these positions, you need to be extra careful because this is almost the opposite of those positions where you can slowly maneuver, and one tempo, here or there, is not so crucial. Here you need to be on your toes in every move, which I will demonstrate in examples...Enjoy!
