GM Joel’s Chess Week Recap - Episode 23

Opening: A05, A30, D20, B94, B40:

Player(s): Khalifman, Papadimitriou, Gruenfeld, Denk, Wei, Fang, Wojtaszek, Mamedyarov, So, Karjakin

Mamedyarov won the tournament created in honor of his close friend, the late Vugar Gashimov. Mamedyarov has been known to be a player who could not deal very well with a loss, and on several occasions, he gave up after a bad game. Not this time, though. Despite his lost game vs. Wojtaszek, Shakhriyar was able to win the tournament with 5.5 points out of 9 rounds, half a point ahead of Wesley So, Vladimir Kramnik and an excellent Veselin Topalov. GM Joel shows us a couple if interesting games from the Gashimov Memorial. The Joel moves on to analyze for us two games from the 50+ World Senior Team Championship, with Alexander Khalifman - a former World Champion - and Yehuda Grunfeld showing that chess can be played at a high level even after one's prime. To conclude today's week recap, GM Benjamin shows us a miniature played by the rising Asian star Wei Yi, in the Chiese Chess Championship, which Wei won convincingly.
