GM Joel’s Chess Week Recap - Episode 160

Opening: D17, A33, C42, B80, C67, C77, C78: QGD Slav, English: symmetrical variation, Petrov defense, Sicilian: Scheveningen, Ruy Lopez

Player(s): Ding, Caruana, Giri, Nepomniachtchi, Wang Hao, Alekseenko, Vachier-Lagrave, Grischuk

Against all odds, the Candidates Tournament is on, now with six rounds complete. Ian Nepomniachtchi has taken the lead with 4.5 points, while tournament favorite Caruana finds himself a point and a half behind, and second favorite Ding may already be out of contention. The Candidates plows on, as cracks emerge in the happy family. Grischuk has stated that he is not enjoying the tournament at all, that the heaviness of the Covid-19 setting is too much and the tournament should be halted. Meanwhile, Nepo is on quite a roll, but he is noticeably coughing. FIDE made sure we all know the players get twice daily checkups, but do these include, at any point, coronavirus testing? I'm afraid they may not want to know if a player should become infected.
