GM Joel’s Chess Week Recap - Episode 154

Opening: B90, B13, D87, C11, C54, E90:

Player(s): Abdusattorov, Van Foreest, Ganguly, Eljanov, Cheparinov, Chigaev, Praggnanandhaa, Topalov, Maghsoodloo, Tabatabae, Esipenko

I remember reading an old Soviet term "first among equals" in an old chess book. You could say that about Gibraltar, where David Paravyan triumphed in the tiebreak after tying with six other players at 7.5/10. In the last round, four co-leaders drew with each other while three players from the group below won to join them. The top four on tiebreak-Paravyan, Wang Hao, Andrei Esipenko, and Daniil Yuffa played for the title. Paravyan eventually defeated Wang Hao, winner at the Isle of Man in the final.
Paravyan is almost exactly the same age as last year's winner Vladislav Artemiev. While he isn't exactly coming from nowhere, it certainly is a major jump for Paravyan to win at the Rock. Artemiev amazingly scored a point more last year than the winners this year, and was immediately proclaimed the next world champion by throngs of fans on social media. The predictions for Paravyan will probably be more modest.
