GM Davorin Kuljasevic - The Importance of Modern Middlegame Tabiyas - Video 11

Opening: A29: English Opening: Four Knights - Kingside Fianchetto

Player(s): Navara, Topalov, Svidler, Aronian, Carlsen, Kramnik, Gelfand, Edouard

The English opening has experienced a surge of popularity over the recent 10-15 years due to several factors. Firstly, it usually leads to relatively more schematic and positional variations compared to 1.e4 and 1.d4 which suits players who prefer not to study too much mainline opening theory. Secondly, even the top players have realized that this opening contains a lot of unexplored territories that lead to complex fights where the objective engine evaluation is not so relevant. Finally, GM Mihail Marin has written several excellent volumes of opening books where he explained the main strategic ideas of this opening in a very accessible way. Today, we will focus on one of the most popular middlegame tabiyas of the English opening, which arises after the following standard opening moves: 1.c4 e5 2.g3 Nf6 3.Bg2 d5 4.cxd5 Nxd5 5.Nc3 Nb6 6.Nf3 Nc6 7.0-0 Be7 8.a3 0-0 9.b4 Be6 10.Rb1 f6 11.d3. Download HERE the PGN file with the games
