Gashimov Memorial 2015 - Round 9

Opening: A05: English Opening

Player(s): Carlsen, Mamedov

GM Lars Bo Hansen recaps Round 9. Magnus Carlsen wins the 2nd Gashimov Memorial, defending the title he had won last year. Magnus entered last round with half a point of advantage over Vishy Anand, and he set up a game with Mamedov that could have led to a draw, although we all know how subtle Magnus can be in endgames with even a very slight advantage. Mamedov felt the pressure - and who doesn't, playing Magnus? - and blundered horribly, resigning on the spot. Anand played a good game against Fabiano Caruana, ended in a draw. Vishy had a great tournament, finishing it with a quite impressive +3 score. In the LIVE rating list, now Anand is #2, one point ahead of Caruana, and once again with 2800+. It seems that Vishy is like good wine: the the older, the better! Today people on ICC were predicting the third match Carlsen vs. Anand for the next Championship, and it would be awesome for the Tiger of Madras, but the road is still pretty long, and we will see his results in the next important tournaments. Overall it has been an interesting and entertaining tournament; the players honored the memory of the late Vugar Gashimov, offering good and fighting chess. Ad majora!
