Game OF the Week: GM Dmitry Jakovenko vs. GM Alexander Onischuk

Opening: D31: QGD: classical variation (5.Bf4)

Player(s): Jakovenko, Onischuk

Three-time U.S. Champion GM Joel Benjamin brings you a new show every Friday at 15:00 Server Time. Joel is regarded by many as one of the best commentators and analysts' we have in the game today -- so if you want to get ahead of the game, get ready to tune-in!

GM Joel says about this week's show: "When we were teenagers, my good friend Michael Wilder coined the term, which unfortunately did not make it into common parlance, “Soviet equalizing goat.” This described a player who expertly neutralized a slight disadvantage to make a comfortable draw with Black (Americans can picture Alexander Ivanov, for example). There is, however, a fine line between obtaining a tidy half-point and getting squashed like a chicken without a chance to squawk (as was once written about a loss of mine).

When a master technician is on the other side, sometimes you don’t make it to the Promised Land. Along the way we may encounter many hidden variations that turned the game one way or the other. Let’s have a look at just such a battle between Russian grandmaster Dmitry Jakovenko and Ukrainian born American GM Alexander Onischuk from the Karpov Poikovsky international."
