Game Of the Week: Bachmann vs. Morozevich - Barcelona GM International

Opening: A07: Reti: King's Indian attack

Player(s): Bachmann, Morozevich

Three-time U.S. Champion GM Joel Benjamin brings you a new show every Friday at 15:00 Server Time. Joel is regarded by many as one of the best commentators and analysts' we have in the game today -- so if you want to get ahead of the game, get ready to tune-in!

The Barcelona GM International produced one of the smallest spreads of any crosstable I've ever seen. Only one point separated the tournament winners from the tailenders in the six player field. Alexander Morozevich was awarded first on tiebreaks, but the finish probably left a sour taste in his mouth. 26-year-old Paraguayan Axel Bachmann handed him a last-round defeat and caught him up at 3/5. Morozevich is a brilliant but unconventional player. In a situation where a draw would clinch first place, his overly quirky opening play landed him in trouble.
