Every Russian Schoolboy Knows - Selected games from the Candidates 2020 - 7

Opening: E08: Catalan: closed - Zagoryansky variation

Player(s): Liren, Alekseenko

This 7-part video series presents one game per each of the seven rounds that were played before the tournament was stopped. While we all hope for the resumption one day, the recovery may take a long time. As I now sit idly, confined to my home, there's no better time to reflect on the games, drawing from my experience of commentating live for one of the Russian-language websites.

7) For the final round, my choice went for the game between the tailenders, Ding Liren-Alekseenko. In a quiet line of the Catalan Ding could have been content with a small advantage, but he saw a chance to create more pressure, only to be confronted by Alekseenko's resolute reply. There were some interesting possibilities for White after the acceptance of the pawn sacrifice, but the dejected Ding never looked for them. Had his opponent been more confident, perhaps that game could have been another disaster for one of the pre-tournament favorites. As is, it petered out to a draw, and largely, went unnoticed by most commentators.
