Every Russian Schoolboy Knows - Selected games from the Candidates 2020 - 5

Opening: D12 : Queen's Gambit Declined Slav

Player(s): Giri, Caruana

This 7-part video series presents one game per each of the seven rounds that were played before the tournament was stopped. While we all hope for the resumption one day, the recovery may take a long time. As I now sit idly, confined to my home, there's no better time to reflect on the games, drawing from my experience of commentating live for one of the Russian-language websites.

5) It is time to look at Anish Giri's tournament. Losing with White in the opening game, as it happened to Anish in Yekaterinburg, is never a good start, but Anish persevered, surviving a tough position against Wang Hao in Round 2, and slowly played himself into a better form. It was time to start winning games, and it almost happened in Round 5, when Giri faced Caruana with the white pieces. Once again, Fabiano chose the Slav, the opening he has preciously little experience with. This time there were no forcing lines to rely upon, and Fabi quickly went wrong. Seemingly, once or twice White had a clear shot at increasing his advantage to decisive proportions, but Giri hesitated and let his opponent back in the game. Draw.
