Every Russian Schoolboy Knows - Selected games from the Candidates 2020 - 4

Opening: C67: Ruy Lopez - Berlin Defense

Player(s): Vachier-Lagrave, Grischuk

This 7-part video series presents one game per each of the seven rounds that were played before the tournament was stopped. While we all hope for the resumption one day, the recovery may take a long time. As I now sit idly, confined to my home, there's no better time to reflect on the games, drawing from my experience of commentating live for one of the Russian-language websites.

4) No doubt, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave paid a lot of attention to the earlier game between Nepo and Grischuk in the Berlin. After all, Ian played Maxime's pet line, where White welcomes the trade of the black bishop for his knight, even at the cost of double pawns now compromising his queenside. In that game Nepo wasn't able to accomplish his goals, but MVL was eager to give it a shot. Grischuk obliged by repeating the whole line, albeit again in a slow, tortured fashion. Being way ahead on the clock, Maxime went for the kill, but missed a better idea that, indeed, in all likeliness would have scored him a full point. As it was, Black was able to defend. A very instructive and entertaining game.
