Every Russian Schoolboy Knows - Selected games from the Candidates 2020 - 3

Opening: C01: French: Exchange variation

Player(s): Grischuk, Wang Hao

This 7-part video series presents one game per each of the seven rounds that were played before the tournament was stopped. While we all hope for the resumption one day, the recovery may take a long time. As I now sit idly, confined to my home, there's no better time to reflect on the games, drawing from my experience of commentating live for one of the Russian-language websites.

3) Grischuk-Wang Hao from Round 3 was a disappointment for the Russian. It started off as planned: his quiet treatment of the opening was a tricky ploy; all it took was a couple of inaccuracies from the Chinese GM for White's advantage to crystallize. And then, as we all expected to witness yet another example of Alexanders' trademark impeccable technique, he neglected a rather obvious threat of his opponent, allowed a transition to a rook ending, and had to be content with a draw. Worse yet, Grischuk's statements after the game made it sound as if he was unhappy with the tournament, rather than with his own play in it.
