Every Russian Schoolboy Knows - Selected games from the Candidates 2020 - 2

Opening: E20: Nimzo-Indian defense

Player(s): Caruana, Alekseenko

This 7-part video series presents one game per each of the seven rounds that were played before the tournament was stopped. While we all hope for the resumption one day, the recovery may take a long time. As I now sit idly, confined to my home, there's no better time to reflect on the games, drawing from my experience of commentating live for one of the Russian-language websites.

2) My featured game for Round 2 is Fabiano Caruana's win over Kirill Alekseenko. Fabiano surprised his less experienced opponent with a choice of the f3 variation in the Nimzo. Kirill relied on his general preparation, but the modern line he chose requires precise handling. Allowing the White's d-pawn to go forward is a possible strategy, but it takes a devil-may-care attitude that was sadly absent from Black's play. The method of converting the advantage by direct attack, demonstrated by White, was very instructive.
