Don’t try this at home! - Sicilian Sveshnikov: Fight Club Rules!

Opening: B33: Sicilian: Sveshnikov

Player(s): Schmidt, Blank, Musialkiewicz, Krasenkov, Bigonnet, Almasi, Hamdouchi, Dorfman

Today Ronen tackles another important variation of the Sicilian defense: the Sveshnikov (1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 e5). The three rules to keep in mind about this variation are: 1) don't give up the f5 square; 2) don't give up the f5 square; 3) don't give up the f5 square. In this interesting video, Ronen shows us some clear examples of how allowing white to play and to dominate the f5 (and d5) square, leads to disaster for black. Permitting a white knight to installs itself on d3, controlling d5 and f5, is a no-no for black in this widely played variation of the Sicilian.
