Attack with LarryC: Karjakin the Scientific Attacker Part 2

Opening: C42, C96: Petrov's Defence, Ruy Lopez: closed

Player(s): Karjakin, Short, Frolyanov

In the second episode of his weekly show dedicated to the Challenger Sergey Karjakin, GM Larry Christiansen shows us two games. Karjakin's attacking style is not flashy: he rarely goes for fireworks on the board with spectacular sacrifices; his approach is more scientific and pragmatic, and always very precise, supported by fantastic technique. Sergey blunders very rarely, he's a great and tenacious defender, and has got the stamina to play on for hours in difficult and complicated positions. You can see this characteristic of the Russian former chess prodigy in the second game that Larry analyzes for us today, where Karjakin plays a fantastic game against the strong English GM Nigel Short. The aforementioned qualities make Karjakin a worthy opponent for the uber-strong World Champion, Magnus Carlsen of Norway. This month Magnus and Sergey will play in the same event, the Norway Chess Tournament in Stavanger, starting the 19th. It will be interesting to follow their game, though obviously neither is going to reveal anything about his preparation! ICC will have full coverage of the Norway Chess Tournament, with live commentary and GOTD video for each round.
