This week GM Larry Christiansen starts a special series of his "Attack with LarryC!" show to pay his personal tribute to Svetozar Gligoric, who passed away at 89 on August the 14th, 2012. Gligoric was one of the chess legends of the 20th century; he was a leading player in the world for almost three decades, in the 50'w, 60's and even the early 70's. A powerful player, he played the most famous players of modern chess history: Fischer, Botvinnik, Tal, Keres, Kortchnoi, Petrosian. The epic battles he fought over the board against Tigran Petrosian are to be considered part of the chess legacy that still drives today's players, and some of these amazing games will be shown by GM Larry in this series. Gligoric had a profound influence on Larry's up bring as a chess player, as a young Larry witnessed Gligoric in action at the Long Pine tournament in 1972. "He was a class act" Larry says, "in and out the game; everybody respected him". Gligoric was a great representative of the game and of his country; he played the Chess Olympiad for Yugoslavia 15 times, winning 13 medals; was a three time candidates participant. In this first episode Larry shows us two games that the Yugoslav legend played against another heavy-weight: Vlastimil Hort. The first game was played in Amsterdam, 1970; the second one in Wijk aan Zee, 1971.
