Attack with LarryC: 1983 U.S. Championship - Whitehead vs. Benjamin

Opening: A57: Benkö gambit

Player(s): Whitehead, Benjamin

Larry Christiansen this week continues with his mini-series on the U.S. Championship. This time we fly 30 years back, with a young Joel Benjamin playing a fine attacking game in the 1983 Championship, held in Ohio. His opponent is the late IM Jay Whitehead, one of the strongest chess players ever to be born in the U.S.. Joel plays a long-term knight sacrifice, to then unleash a strong attack on his opponent's King side, which doesn't allow Whitehead to avoid defeat.
