GM Petrov’s New Strategies in the Middlegame - Vd15: Isolated Pawn

Opening: E57: Nimzo-Indian: 4.e3 - Main line with 8...dxc4 and 9...Bxc4 cxd4

Player(s): Petrosian, Balashov

In this video, we will see one of the critical topics in the positional game, which is the outpost. In this video, you will see one prevalent structure, where there is an isolated pawn. GM Marian shows you some plans on how to play when you have such a pawn. Most young or club players only know that it's a weakness and usually try to avoid having such positions. Having such a pawn sometimes can give you benefits like an outpost, a semi-open file, and restricting some of the minor pieces of your opponent. Most of the time, there is a d4 or d5 pawn. In those positions, the key is to play actively and not trade many pieces. It is essential to create an attack against the king until your opponent is trying to fight against the isolated pawn.
