Game Of the Week: GM Short vs. GM Howell

Opening: E47: Nimzo-Indian

Player(s): Short, Howell

Three-time U.S. Champion GM Joel Benjamin brings you a new show every Friday at 15:00 Server Time. Joel is regarded by many as one of the best commentators and analysts' we have in the game today -- so if you want to get ahead of the game, get ready to tune-in!

Sometimes it seems like yesterday when Nigel Short and I were battling it out in junior events. But Nigel is nearing fifty, an old man in today's youth-friendly chess landscape.

That's why he was so excited to win the Pokerstars International on the Isle of Man. Short's 7.5 from 9 put him a point clear of an illustrious field which included Vachier Lagrave, Fressinet, and Adams. Though Short's favorite move through the years has been 1.e4, in his dotage he has occasionally sprinkled in queen pawn and flank openings. In the last round Nigel contested a sharp Nimzo Indian with a Benoni flavor against David Howell. The younger man was the first to falter and the wily old veteran was able to take the game and the first prize.
