Today, we remember Grandmaster Georgi Tringov, born in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, on March 7, 1937.
Three-time Bulgarian Champion between 1963 and 1985, Tringov represented his country in a stunning 12 Olympiads between 1956 and 1982, winning twice the individual Gold medal.
Tringov was a member of the Bulgarian team that won the World Team Student Championship in 1959, also placing second in 1957 and 1958.
The second Bulgarian to reach the GM title after Milko Bobotzov, Tringov is often remembered for his famous losses against champions such as Mikhail Tal and Boris Spassky. In contrast, the Bulgarian GM can boast wins against stars such as Short, Hort, Szabo, Filip, Taimanov, Sax, Seirawan, Nunn, Romanishin, Miles, Browne, and many others.
