Today is the birthday of Grandmaster Alexander Chernin, born in Kharkiv, Ukraine, on March 6, 1960.
The son of two important medical doctors, Alexander had Vladimir Savon and Mark Dvoretsky as coaches.
Chernin was European Junior Champion in 1980, Russian Champion in 1985, and qualified for the Candidates tournament in Montpellier in 1985.
In the nineties, Chernin moved to Hungary, the country he represented in two Olympiads (1994 and 1996). Chernin reached his peak rating in January 1998, with 2645 Elo points.
Chernin is a FIDE Senior Trainer who coached many young stars, including Fabiano Caruana, the Polgar sisters, Alexandra Kostenuik, and Jeffrey Xiong.
