PRAECEPTOR GERMANIAE
World Championship, Düsseldorf-Munich 1908:
Emanuel Lasker-Siegbert Tarrasch - Source: wikimediachess.com
Today, we remember Grandmaster Siegbert Tarrasch, born in Wrocław, Poland, on March 5, 1862.
Tarrasch was a medical doctor and a three-time German Champion; he was given the GrandMaster title by Tsar Nicholas II in St. Petersburgh in 1914, together with Lasker, Capablanca, Alekhine, and Marshall, the first five players to bear the Grandmaster title. In 1908, Tarrasch challenged Emanuel Lasker for the world crown but lost heavily 8 to 3.
Tarrasch's victories in international tournaments are countless, as well as his outstanding contribution to the Classic School.
Two openings are indissolubly tied to his name: The Tarrasch Defense (1.d4 d5. 2.c4 e6 3. Cc3 c5), and the Tarrash variant in the French Defense (1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Cd2).
Today's combination is spectacular; it was played in a friendly match.
