Today is Grandmaster Joel Benjamin's birthday. He was born on March 11, 1964, in New York, USA.
Joel has been one of the most illustrious and loved ICC collaborators for years, creating hundreds of chess videos for the ICC members.
Joel was considered Bobby Fischer's heir, even breaking Fischer's record when Joel became a Master at 13.
Benjamin was long compared to Nigel Short, the English prodige, who was then destined for higher peaks in his chess career.
Benjamin is a three-time US Champion and won three editions of the US Open and two of the Canadian Open. Joel participated in six Olympiads between 1988 and 2002, winning one silver and one bronze with the US Team.
Benjamin reached his peak rating in July 1993, with 2620 Elo points, which placed him at the 23rd position in the world.
In the 1990s, Benjamin was part of the IBM team that programmed the supercomputer Deep Blue, which was famous for defeating Kasparov in 1997.
